Chandler Wildlife Education: What to Do About a Rodent On the Roof

It probably doesn’t happen too often, but occasionally a rodent will somehow get onto the roof of your house, and then not be able to figure out how to get down again. What should you do if this happens at your house? The first thing to do is to give it a little time. The rodent probably doesn’t want to be on your roof any more than you want it up there. It wants to get back to its home, to its food source, and its family. So give it a couple of days to figure out on its own how to get back down. But don’t wait too long, or it will die of thirst or starvation. Here are a few ideas on what to do about the situation.

DIY
To try to shoo a rodent off your roof without causing it harm will likely take at least two people. There are a couple of ways that you can choose to remove the rodent. One is to try and capture it. It will be frightened, so will try to run everywhere but where you want it to go. Take a small box up on the roof with you to capture it in. Doing this will depend, too, on how steep a pitch your roof has to it. If you have a house with a flat roof, it will be much easier. Otherwise, you should be extremely careful to not fall off the roof. If you have a steep roof, you may want to try using a large net on a long handle to try to snag the critter while you stay on a ladder. A pool net or butterfly net could work for this. If there is a large tree with branches that overhang the roof, you could try to just shoo the rodent toward the tree, hoping that it will remember how it got there in the first place, and scamper back onto the limbs. However you choose to try to get the critter off your roof, be very careful of your own safety first, and then take care of the rodent’s safety second.

Call a Professional
If you’ve tried everything you can do, or if you aren’t able to do anything, it’s best to just call a professional who specializes in animal control. A reputable professional will have the proper equipment to bring out to safely remove the rodent from your rooftop.
